Jamie set up JS Decor (edin) Ltd in April 2022. He's 31, he's been on the brushes since he could hold one, and in four short years he has put together one of Edinburgh's strongest decorating reputations — five stars across one hundred and thirty-nine Google reviews, and a Trusted Trader Scotland badge to back it up.

He's a finisher first. The kind of decorator who takes the cover-up off, walks back to look at it twice in different light, and only then says he's done. That's how you get to a 5.0 average without ever begging for a review.

The team works across Edinburgh and the Lothians out of a yard in Great Carleton Place, Portobello. Tenement halls in the New Town, full repaints in Morningside, fresh-build flats in Leith, sash-window refurbs in Stockbridge — and the bit nobody else wants to do, the Ames-taped plasterboard finish that needs a proper specialist.

What we do

Seven trades. One team.

Most painters can roll a wall. Fewer can refurb a Victorian sash, strip 80 years of paint off a stone surround, hang a £200-a-roll wallpaper, and finish your plasterboard with Ames tape. Jamie's team does all of it.

01

Interior Painting

Walls, ceilings, woodwork, full-room repaints. Dustsheets, masking and prep treated as part of the job — not an afterthought.

02

Exterior Painting

Render, masonry, render-on-stone tenement frontage, soffits, fascias, garage doors and railings. Weather-watched, properly primed.

03 · SPECIALIST

Ames Taping

Mechanical jointing of plasterboard. Bazookas, flat boxes and corner rollers — the same finish you see on commercial fit-outs, brought into your home. Mirror-flat seams, no shadow lines.

04

Wallpaper Hanging

Pattern matched, lined and hung properly. From feature walls to full hallways. Heavy-weight, paste-the-wall, lining paper — we hang the lot.

05

Door & Window Refurb

Sash-window overhaul, sticking doors, draught seals, fresh paint. Bring tired Edinburgh joinery back to life without replacing it.

06

Paint & Varnish Stripping

Years of overpaint off original woodwork, stair spindles, mantelpieces and stone surrounds. Heat, chemical or sanding — the right method for the surface.

07

Tiling

Bathrooms, splashbacks, kitchen floors. Tiling that actually lines up with the doorframe, the window and the next wall.

Letting agents on a turnover deadline. Parents who don't want a painter underfoot at the school run. Offices that need a weekend repaint. We do evenings and weekends — just ask.

Specialist Skill

Ames taping.
The flattest finish
in the trade.

Most painters skim, fill and hope for the best. Ames taping is different. It's a mechanical jointing system — tools called bazookas, flat boxes and corner rollers — that lays paper tape and joint compound onto plasterboard seams in one continuous pass. The result is a glass-flat surface with no shadow lines, no popped tape, no telegraphing under low-angle light.

It's how high-end commercial fit-outs and Hollywood film sets get away with bare-painted plasterboard walls. It costs a bit more in tools and skill — that's why most decorators don't offer it. We do, and we're one of the few in Edinburgh who can quote for it confidently.

When you'll want it
  • New plasterboard partition walls
Loft conversions, garage rooms, stud walls — finished without the wait for a plasterer.
  • Boarded ceilings & soffits
Critical low-angle light is brutal — Ames tape gives a finish that doesn't show seams under spotlights.
  • Insulation board overlays
Refurbing a Victorian flat with PIR-backed plasterboard? Ames is the right finish.
  • Commercial fit-outs & offices
Faster than wet-plaster, drier on completion, ready for paint sooner.

"Jamie and the team painted our tenement flat in Marchmont — cornicing, two huge halls, four rooms. Cleanest job I've ever had done. Dustsheets up before the kettle was on, brushes washed, no mess. Cannot recommend enough."

"Had Jamie in to Ames-tape the plasterboard in our loft conversion. We'd had two other decorators look at it and pull a face. He just got on with it. Walls came out flat as glass — you can't even see where the boards meet."

Common questions

Asked & answered.

The questions Jamie gets every week. Anything missing? Just call.

What exactly is Ames taping?

+
Ames taping is a mechanical drywall jointing system — a set of tools (bazookas, flat boxes, corner rollers) that lay paper tape and joint compound onto plasterboard seams in one continuous pass. It produces a Level 5 finish: glass-flat, no shadow lines under low-angle light, ready for paint or thin-coat plaster. Faster, cleaner and more consistent than skimming. We're one of the few Edinburgh decorators who specialise in it.

Why does Ames taping matter for my home?

+
If you have new plasterboard going up — loft conversion, stud wall, insulation overlay — you have two finishing choices: wet-plaster skim, or Ames-taped joints. Ames is drier, faster and gives a finish that holds up under spotlights and natural light without showing seams. It's the gold standard for boarded ceilings and partitions. Skim is fine for most jobs; Ames is better when the finish has to be flawless.

What paint brands do you use?

+
Whatever's right for the job. Trade-grade Dulux and Crown for hard-wearing interiors, Johnstone's Aquaguard or Sandtex for masonry, Little Greene and Farrow & Ball when clients want the deeper colour range, and Tikkurila for premium woodwork. We'll talk you through choices — including washable matt vs eggshell — before any tin is opened.

How long will my project take?

+
Rough Edinburgh guideline: a single bedroom is one day, a hallway-stairs-landing is two to three, a typical three-bedroom flat repaint is one working week, exterior tenement frontage runs three to five days weather permitting. Ames taping a small loft conversion is usually two to three days end-to-end. We give a written start and finish date with every quote.

Can you paint outside in Edinburgh weather?

+
Yes — with eyes on the forecast. Most modern masonry and trim paints need above 5°C and a dry surface for proper cure. We work April through October for most exterior jobs and watch the rolling 48-hour forecast. If it turns, we cover up and come back. We'd rather lose a day than leave you with a paint job that fails in twelve months.

How do I get a quote, and is it really free?

+
Yes, properly free — no callout, no pressure. Fill in the form below or call 07850 682349. For most jobs Jamie comes out, has a look, asks a few questions and sends a written, itemised quote within 48 hours. No deposit required to book.
